Congressman is Bihar speaker, as NDA gives in

The Opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal-sponsored Congress candidate Sadanand Singh was today unanimously elected speaker of the Bihar assembly after the ruling National Democratic Alliance decided not to force a contest.

RJD leader Laloo Prasad Yadav proposed Singh's name for the speaker's post which was seconded by former finance minister Sankar Prasad Tekriwal.

The speaker was elected by voice vote.
